Henry Connor considers the life of a remarkable local figure. From his accession to the Royal College of Physicians in 1782 to his death at his Belmont estate in 1826, Matthews typified the energy of the age, serving as MP and Mayor and building a magnificent house and landscape garden. Nigel Jefferies tells a heroic story from the 18th century with echoes in the present. The canal ultimately connected Hereford with the River Severn at Gloucester via Ledbury and Newent. Though his achievement was immense, the project completed by engineer Josiah Clowes was neither on time nor on budget.
