In 1790, Revd William Gilpin took a boat trip from Ross down the Wye and established a new reason to travel, to see landscapes as ‘picturesque’. Join Chris Sullivan FSA on the journey, with later artists and diarists, and hear how the Tour developed into early mass tourism as transport links improved in an industrialising landscape. Using items in the HARC Archives, Chris will end with the creation and fall of the barely-known but world-class art gallery at Goodrich Court.
