SUMMARY:The Opportunities of Empire - the career of Nicholas Pateshall R.N.
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on history at HARC! Using the archives extensive range of resources\, our programme for this event will explore the adventures of Rear Admiral Nicholas Pateshall and his rise from midshipman to mayor of Hereford – with journeys all around the world en route! We will look at how the expanding British Empire at the turn of the 19th century provided a wealth of new opportunities. Our final session will be a discussion of Pateshall’s own journal written on his voyage taking convicts to Australia in 1803-1804. \n  \nSession 1 – 1.15-2.15 p.m. Nicholas Pateshall and his Voyages Round the Globe \nYvonne Chapman will examine the early life and illustrious\, swashbuckling career of this Herefordshire sailor. Using his family correspondence and own journal she will explore the influences that drove this sometimes errant son\, warrior\, transporter of convicts and civic servant. \n\n2.15-2.45 p.m. Refreshment break and opportunity to view Nicholas’ journal and family correspondence \n  \nSession 2 – 2.45-4.00 p.m. Nicholas Pateshall’s Journal: Taking Convicts to Australia 1803-1804 \nDr. Jane Adams will give a short introduction to the early colonisation of Australia and the convict system. Jane and Yvonne will then lead a discussion of what Nicholas Pateshall’s journal tells us about the reasons for the journey\, the values of the time and the impact of the expedition on crew and convicts as well as the indigenous people of Australia. \nCost – £5 per session or £7.50 for both.

SUMMARY:Impressing people - seals and sealing practices in medieval England and Wales
DESCRIPTION:Seals were the medieval equivalent of signatures or credit cards\, used to validate and authenticate as well as secure documents and other items. There were far more than just administrative and legal tools\, though. As little packages of image and text\, they identified and represented institutions\, corporate bodies\, offices\, and men and women from royalty down to unfree peasants. Dr Elizabeth New of the University of Aberystwyth examines these fragile yet information packed sources. PLEASE NOTE – the speaker will be wearing a face covering and encourages the audience to do the same.
