SUMMARY:Tree Line exhibition at HARC - workshop opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The next exhibition at HARC will be an artistic one with an emphasis on trees. One of the artists\, Helen Arthur\, whose work has been exhibited at HARC before\, would like to run a free workshop for any of our volunteers who would like to take part. Helen has sent this message: \n\nHelen Arthur is co-curating the Treelines exhibition\, launching 5 August in HARC foyer\, and would like to offer a short creative workshop to HARC members and volunteers using a printmaking method. You don’t have to be able to draw or have any experience – just a bit of curiosity and a willingness to get inky. \n\nWe will be working over black and white photographs or printouts on transparent drypoint plates sized 15cm x 20cm with etching tools (like drawing). Helen will provide some ideas or you could bring an image or sketch you’d like to work from to fit the format exactly this size. Ideal subject matter for this process is quite detailed – the trees in the Treelines Exhibition work perfectly\, as do insects\, small birds and foliage. \nThe workshop will take place on Friday 8 August\, 10am – 1pm \nHelen will provide all other materials and a printing press of course. \nDo wear older clothes or bring an apron/old shirt as an overall. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Impressing people - seals and sealing practices in medieval England and Wales
DESCRIPTION:Seals were the medieval equivalent of signatures or credit cards\, used to validate and authenticate as well as secure documents and other items. There were far more than just administrative and legal tools\, though. As little packages of image and text\, they identified and represented institutions\, corporate bodies\, offices\, and men and women from royalty down to unfree peasants. Dr Elizabeth New of the University of Aberystwyth examines these fragile yet information packed sources. PLEASE NOTE – the speaker will be wearing a face covering and encourages the audience to do the same.
